Gator Season
August 9, 2023 | Bitterroot River, Clark Fork River, Fishing Report, Season | Spring, Season | Summer
August is a good time for a change of pace. It’s hot and we’ve been guiding trout every day since the snow melted. When the water temps get hot and the trout aren't as happy as they were a month ago, we love to switch our focus to the fantastic Northern Pike fishery we have in Western Montana. While these fish were illegally introduced to our waters decades ago, they aren't going anywhere. And since they are here to stay, we might as well learn to love the green slimy predators.
While catching them on flies is a lot of fun and often a first for people in the boat, all is fair in pike fishing. Conventional tackle can be very effective when targeting these fish. And, to be honest, casting an 8-weight fly rod for a few hours can leave you with a sore wing. So fly rod or spinning rod, if your guide asks if you would be interested in a pike day, say yes. You might just find your new favorite fish to catch.Â
